Salai, did you see the crossbow model?

Posted on March 7, 2020March 24, 2020 by sherifguirguis

“Salai, did you see the crossbow model?” Da Vinci walked around the workshop, bending at each corner and under each table searching.

“What crossbow? I didn’t even know you had weapons in here.” Salai sat on the posing podium and didn’t raise his head to the question.

“I designed a model for a far bigger crossbow, one that can defend a city.” Da Vinci stepped around Salai as he continued his search.

“What an idea. Crossbows are assault weapons, not defense weapons, still, you have so much clutter around, it could be anywhere.” Salai shrugged and stood, he approached the decanter sitting on the finished paintings table and held it to drink.

“Are you going to drink and leave me to search alone?” Da Vinci looked critically at the younger man who stopped his arm midway up with the pitcher. “Well, come search with me, now.”

Salai sighed and mumbled something incoherent, then he headed towards the spots Da Vinci checked earlier and started to search for the model.

Where Da Vinci was fast and distracted, Salai was slow and deliberate, and the search went on.

An hour passed, the workshop looked even messier than before and far more cluttered.

“Where is the model Salai? Where is my crossbow?” Da Vinci had a fire in his eyes as he addressed his assistant.

“How should I know? I am not the keeper of your workshop.” Salai’s tone was higher and far angrier than he did an hour ago.

“You were the keeper of my estate the entire time I was away, nobody had access to my workshop but you.” Da Vinci fumed and his voice was also high by that point.

“Are you blaming me for losing it or stealing it?” Salai was shouting now.

“I would not be anything new to you, you stole from me before.” Da Vinci was waving his arms in the air as he shouted, and he could be heard by anybody near his house, even though the walls were quite thick.

“I will accept your accusations, I am leaving.” Salai turned and left the workshop, then the entire house.

Da Vinci was still angry, and he reached for the pitcher and threw it at the wall in frustration. “Where did my model crossbow go?”

Deep beneath the feet of Da Vinci, under the earth’s crust, Robin stood in front of the council of the purples.

“Thank you for your efforts to procure this model, you have saved the future of Agartha and the upper world.” The head of the council bowed to Robin, who bowed back twice as deep.

After a moment of silence, Robin asked, “May I know how did I save the world stealing a tiny crossbow?”

“One day, it would have been taken by a great invader, the grey man, and used to crush entire cities, now it will never be.” The councilman said solemnly.

Robin nodded in acceptance, turned, and left the room.

No, most of these short stories are not in the book at all, but they represent the spirit of The Green Boy, our first book.
